11th January 2012 - Launch of Wheathampstead Friends

Wheathampstead Friends

Wheathampstead Community Group jointly with Wheathampstead Churches Together has set up a new volunteer service to provide help to village residents through visiting, listening, and light practical tasks for those who are lonely, acting as  carers,  suffering from bereavement or experiencing other relationship losses.

County
Cllr Maxine Crawley who provided funds for a series of training sessions from her County grant budget formally launched the service, commented “this really is a  tremendous joint community project for Wheathampstead. Many local residents will benefit from the friendly help that will be provided by a team of dedicated volunteers. I wish all concerned every success.”

Wheathampstead Community Group is a charity which already helps residents in a number of other areas including providing drivers to take people who cannot travel under their own transport to hospitals or other key appointments. An Internet Cafe meets every Tuesday between 10 and 12 at Wheathampstead Library..

Lydia Gladwin who leads on the new service, commented at a gathering of the many volunteers already actively involved in the Community Group’s existing projects “ we hope that this new volunteer service will make a real difference for some Wheathampstead residents who feel lonely or isolated.”   With Churches Together  planning and training volunteers has taken place over the past 12 months. Volunteers are now trained and happy to help. Some volunteers are trained in bereavement visiting.

If a Wheathampstead resident needs help and/or support they should contact Lydia Gladwin on 01582 834223 for further information or click here for a referral form.
